Joseph is a twelve-year-old seventh grader. Joseph plays on the middle school soccer, wrestling, and baseball team. While not a superior athlete, Joseph has a strong work ethic, is responsible, and his coaches see him as a leader. While Joseph rarely earns As in his classes, he has a solid B average and brings to the classroom the positive attitude he exhibits as an athlete. Joseph is willing to wrestle with difficult topics until he understands them. He is courteous and does not demand attention from his teachers. Unfortunately his parents report several days can pass before he has a substantial interaction with his teachers. When questioned about this Joseph teacher’s report because he is so self sufficient, it is not necessary to spend as much time with him, especially when there are other students with serious academic deficits not likely to pass the mandatory state assessments.
